Triple Sec: an overview of the liquor and what can replace it

Triple Sec - orange-flavored liqueur, similar to Curaçao liqueur, but less sweet and colorless. Alcohol content - 15-40%.

The history of the Triple Sec drink

Triple Sec is a typical representative of the cocktail orange liqueurs that flooded Europe in the XIX century.

The original version of the drink appeared in the Western French town of Saumur in 1834.

It was created by confectioner and winemaker Jean-Baptiste Combier. Over the course of several decades, the restless Frenchman continued to refine his creation.

A certain role in this process was played by a certain François Raspail, with whom Combier shared a prison cell in the 1850s, when he was serving a term for opposing the newly minted French emperor, Napoleon III.

At the same time, Triple Sec has never become the indivisible intellectual property of its creator.

In addition to the house of Combier, the above-mentioned drink with some minor modifications is produced by such manufacturers as Lucas Bols, De Kuyper and McGuinness.

Production of Triple Sec

The unchanged basis for the production of Triple Sec liqueur is an alcoholic infusion of sweet orange peel and bitter orange.

The substance thus obtained is distilled three times in good old copper alambics, after which it is sweetened with sugar syrup and diluted to the required strength.

At the same time, each manufacturer tries to give the drink some individuality by adding various herbs and spices at the infusion stage.

The result is a clear orange decoct with a spicy herbal flavor.

Traditional liqueur strength can vary between 15-40 degrees.

Analogues of Triple Sec liqueur

Triple Sec can be replaced: any variation of liqueur Curacao (regardless of color) and Cointreau.

The difference between these drinks is the amount of sugar content. Triple sec is the least sweet of the bunch.

In terms of alcohol content, for example, the strength of Cointreau should be 40 degrees only.

And also in some other features of the production process, in particular, at the stage of distillation.

How to drink Triple Sec

The presence of herbal ingredients in the liqueur of interest theoretically suggests the possibility of drinking the drink as a digestif (on the rocks and from liqueur glasses).

Triple Sec looks more acceptable in combination with orange juice or, say, Fanta. However, in practice, it is most often used as a cocktail ingredient. In this regard, it is enough to recall such names as "Alligator", "B-57" (a very successful variation on the famous "B-52") or "Mai Tai".
