Schwarzschog liqueur: overview, history, how to drink + 5 cocktail recipes

Germany is famous not only for beer and sausages, but also for its traditional herbal liqueurs. Undoubtedly, the most famous of them is Jägermeister, but in the heart of the country another quite popular liqueur called Schwartzhog is also produced.

Despite some external similarities with its national brother, Schwarzschog has a completely self-sufficient taste and aroma that is impossible not to love.

The history of Schwartzhog liqueur

It all started in the XIII century, when Count Karl August von Gardenberg and his family moved to the castle founded by the Archbishop of Mainz in 1101. A so-called distillery was built in the county, which was engaged in the production of spirits, including: "Korn" (32%), "Doppelkorn" (37.5%) and herbal liqueur "Schwartzhog" (36.7%).

The recipe for the herbal drink was invented in the XI century, and since then it has been passed down from generation to generation of the Gardenberg family.

Production features and interesting facts

Schwartzhog means black boar, and it is not named so by chance. Legend has it that one night, when everyone was sleeping in the castle, they wanted to attack it. But a wild boar that lived in the county began to squeal very loudly and woke up the guards, thus saving the whole family from death.

And since then, the black boar has become a symbol of the Gardenberg family and was even depicted on the family coat of arms.

All components of the liqueur are collected and selected only by hand. The composition of Schwarzschog includes fruits, roots and nuts. As well as extracts of plant materials: pork root, gentian, saffron, lovage, anise, bitter wormwood, peppermint, allspice and bitter orange distillate.

The spicy liqueur has a dark brown color, harmonious, strong taste with notes of nuts, vanilla, citrus fruits and spices. The flavor of the drink is full of hints of candied fruit, cocoa and confectionery spices.
