Technical grapes: what is it, where is it used, growing features, popular varieties

What is technical grapes

Technical grapes are a grape variety intended for wine production. It is used exclusively for processing. Because of this, such grapes should not be considered second-rate.

Many people associate recycling with waste. This is not a true statement. Grapes that have been processed with high quality have pleasant organoleptic properties.

Features of growing technical grapes

Usually, vertical trellises (supports) are used to grow grape varieties for the production of alcoholic beverages. Such structures make it easy to control vine growth and soil illumination.

The main purpose of vertical trellises is to prevent all components of the vine (stems, leaves and grape bunches) from coming into contact with each other, because the bunches should hang down, as well as to separate the fruits and leaves from the ground in order to minimize the impact (but not exclude) various infections and insects.

All these manipulations are necessary in order to grow a crop with certain parameters. If the vine is too fertile, the quality of the berries will decrease significantly. The vine will take all the nutrients from the soil for more berries.

Otherwise, a smaller number of berries on the vine yields a crop with a higher content of useful and nutrients. In this case, the wine from such a harvest will be richer and better.

The difference between technical and table grape varieties

Table grape varieties are grown for food. This berry has significantly fewer seeds, is larger in size, and has a delicate sweetish taste.

Technical grapes are grown only for the production of alcoholic beverages. This berry is small in size with a thin skin and sour taste.

Depending on the growing environment and climatic conditions, grapes have different flavors. The composition of the grapes is influenced by the soil composition and temperature regime of the environment where it is grown.

Berries grown on stony soil are considered the best raw material for the production of vintage beverages.
