Psou wine: history and review of the drink

Psou wine: history and review of the drink

The climate of Abkhazia is not considered to be the most favorable for wine production: frequent rains, high temperature and humidity are not conducive to grape cultivation. However, winemaking appeared here in ancient times - probably in 3-2 thousand years ago. years. to n.е. э.

This is evidenced by numerous finds of vessels with the remains of dry grape seeds. Earlier traces of winemaking activity were found only in the Middle East. It is not surprising that local drinks have become famous far beyond the borders of Abkhazia.

History and features of production

White semi-sweet wine "Psou" was first produced at the Sukhumi plant in 1958. Initially, it was made from a single local variety, Tsolikauri. For a long time, only a few proven grape varieties were grown in Abkhazia. Later, other varieties were imported, which also affected the composition of the drinks. Now Psou is also produced from Aligote, Sauvignon, Rkatsiteli and other grapes.

The name of the drink seems strange and unusual to the ear at first acquaintance. However, for those who have been to Abkhazia, there is nothing surprising in it: this is the name of the river flowing in this area.

Psou, like other local alcoholic beverages, is produced by the Abkhazian Wines and Waters Company. The heyday of industrial production is associated with representatives of the Achba family, who have been engaged in winemaking for three generations. It is noteworthy that grape harvesting in Abkhazia is an exclusively male occupation. This tradition has not been broken for many years. When you open a bottle of Psou, you can be sure that the raw materials for it were harvested by strong men's hands.

The wine is produced by blending (mixing different varieties), which allows to obtain a drink with a rich flavor. Excellent quality is confirmed by consumer recognition and awards. The Psou brand won a gold medal at the Wine and Vodka competition held in Sochi in 2003, as well as two silver awards at international exhibitions.

Description of the drink

The wine belongs to the category of white semi-sweet. The strength is about 10%, the sugar content is 3-5%. The color of the drink is pronounced - light golden or straw.

The aroma is delicate, fruity with light floral notes and a pleasant sweetness in the end. Connoisseurs note that the wine is "easy to drink" and has a "truly harmonious taste" that does not cause "hangovers, headaches or heartburn".

Recommendations for use

The drink goes well with white meat, fish dishes, light mushroom and vegetable snacks. Cheese and fruit are also suitable for it. It is better to serve Psou chilled to 8-10 C°.
