Leeds beer: history and a brief overview of types

The company producing Lidskoe beer is the oldest brewery in Belarus.

The brewery offers interesting excursions. Everyone can see the process of producing the intoxicating drink with their own eyes.

Every year, at the initiative of the company's founders, the LIDSKAE BEER MASTER competition is held - a bartender competition.

History of Leeds beer

It begins back in 1876, when a Jewish merchant Nosel Zelikovich Pupko established a brewery in his hometown of Lida in Belarus. Initially, production was organized in small batches. However, Nosel was a self-important man and decided to earn the title of the best supplier to the Imperial Court.

It took him more than 8 years to achieve his goal. He had to provide the court with the best quality goods at the lowest prices. Nosel Pupko has passed all the inspections of the special commission organized by the Empire with dignity.

At the international exhibition in Reims in 1903, the brewery received the first silver medal. Nosel decided to put all the awards of this drink on a tag near the factory label. The tag depicts a deer with its hooves resting on a barrel of beer.

In 1915, the Russian Empire declared Prohibition, but Nosel's son Meilach Pupko did not close the brewery. In order to stay afloat, it was decided to produce kvass.

In the late 1930s, Nosel Pupko's grandsons took over the company: Mark and Simon. By the beginning of World War II, they had adjusted the production of Zhyhulivske beer, which was very popular in those years. In 1939, the brewery was nationalized, but the owners continued to work.

In 1943, the German invaders organized a small concentration camp at the plant, and all the workers and Simon Pupko were imprisoned there. During the transfer of prisoners to Maidanek, Simon and a small part of the employees escaped and joined a partisan group.

After the end of the Second World War, the brewery was restored and began to increase production again, and new and improved varieties of the drink were developed.

In 2009, the Lida Brewery became part of the Finnish brewing concern OLVI. Within two years, all the equipment was updated, which doubled the scale of brewing. The production employs specially trained personnel who undergo a mandatory internship in Germany before employment.

Newly developed beers are sent to a German laboratory for compliance with current standards.
