Badagoni wine: history, overview of types, how and what to drink

Badagoni Wines has enjoyed great success with a wide range of local wines, some of the best in Georgia. A wide range of products is also represented on international markets, about half of which is exported to Ukraine. Production volume is 1.5 million bottles annually.

History of Badagoni wines

2002: The wine project was born. It took several years to work out the details of production. The eastern region of Kakheti was chosen as the location. The winery is located in the village of Zemo.

2006: Year the brand was founded. They started producing alcohol immediately.

2018: In China, at ASIA WINE & Alaverdi Badagoni line received gold at the SPIRITS AWARDS 2018.

2019: The producer won the title of the best in Georgia according to the results of the German competition "Munduns Vini". At the Australian "Sidney International Wine Competition" in 2019, the dry red wine was included in the list of the 100 best. An unprecedented case for Georgia.

Location

Badagoni Wines is located in the fertile valley of the Alazani River. In the north near the spectacular Caucasus Mountains. The unique climate of the region creates a rich soil for winemaking.

The company owns two wineries. One is located in Akhmeta district, Zemo Khodasheni village. Second in the municipality of Sagaregio, village of Manavi. During the construction of the winery, the company's management invited world-renowned specialists in the installation of modern facilities. Winery buildings, equipment and laboratory fully comply with ISO standards.

The collaboration

Dr. Donato Lanati, head of the Enosis wine laboratory, one of the five best oenologists (wine science) and winner of the Oscar del Vino award, takes an active part in the company's activities.

Badagoni Wines is proud to cooperate with the Alaverdi Monastery, which was built in the 9th century, and produces a line of wines "Alaverdi Traditions". Recently, the company has been cooperating with the well-known Italian companies Bertolaso and Enotec.

Types of Badagoni wines

Types of Badagoni wines

  1. Alaverdi Tradition, 13.5% alcohol. Dry red wine from the Saperavi variety. Deep cherry flavor. The taste is exquisite, with spicy fruit notes. The aroma is bright, cherry and spices are felt. The aftertaste is long-lasting. The wine is matured in oak barrels made by the Italian company Della Toffla. Temperature, in particular during maceration and fermentation, is carefully controlled.

  2. Alaverdi Tradition, 13.5%. Dry white wine from the Rkatsiteli variety. Straw. Rich and fruity. Dried fruits, ripe peaches and apricots intertwine in the aroma. Finish with rich tannins. It is aged in the monastery cellars, namely in the kvevri at a constant low temperature, because the kvevri is buried in the ground. Miniature grape bunches and fruit skins are used in the fermentation and maturation process.

  3. Kakhetian Noble, 13.5%. Dry red wine from Saperavi. Dark pomegranate. The taste is soft, silky, with currants and wild berries in harmony. The rich aroma is woven from cherry and oak notes. The aftertaste is long. Grapes for this type are harvested early in the morning, carefully sorted by hand. Alcohol is fermented in special horizontal tanks. The temperature is controlled automatically. The wine matures in French barrels from one to 16 months.

  4. Kakhetian Noble, 13.5%. Dry white with Kahuri Mtsvane and Rkatsiteli. Light yellow. The taste is complex, soft, tinged with fruit and citrus. It smells of apple freshness, peach sweetness and mineral notes. The aftertaste is drying and sour.

  5. Kindzmarauli, 12%. Semi-sweet red wine from Saperavi. The color is similar to overripe cherries. The taste is multifaceted, velvety with a fruity bouquet. Black fruits and cherries in the smell. The drink is made unique by three types of vinifiers in production.

  6. Tsinandali, 13% alcohol content. Dry white wine with Kahuri Mtsvane and Rkatsiteli. Straw. The taste is multifaceted, apple and spicy with peach hints. The delicate aroma reveals a floral bouquet, citrus fruits and berries. Its main advantage is the absence of acid.

  7. Alazani Valley, 12.5%. White semi-sweet from Rkatsiteli. Golden amber color. Invigorating with spicy and fruity tones. It smells like quince.

  8. Badagoni Brut, 12.5%. Dry sparkling wine from Kahuri Mtsvane. Light yellow. The taste is light with citrus notes and freshness of apples. Unique and light citrus flavor. The aftertaste is long, refreshing. Produced using the Charmat method. Belongs to the premium class.

  9. Badagoni Rose, 11%. Semi-sweet sparkling wine from Saperavi. Pale pink. Delicate with notes of fruit and berries. Red berries intertwined with fruity tones are clearly visible in the aroma. The aftertaste is tinged with sweetness.

  10. Maestro Semi-Dry, 12%. Sparkling semi-dry wine with Kahuri Mtsvane. Delicate amber. Exquisite taste, which harmonizes citrus, ripe fruit and sour notes. The aroma reveals a bouquet of spring flowers with hints of freshness.

How and with what to drink

Red dry wines should be served with pork, beef, lamb, chilled to 15 °C. Vegetable appetizers and fish are in harmony with white dry wine, cool them down to 7-10 °C. Red and white semi-sweet can be served with desserts. Brut is usually served as an aperitif, but it can be combined with any dish. Sparkling wines are also cooled to 7-10 °C and are offered with cheeses, fruits and seafood.
